The allure of the small-stakes, big-win bet has captivated punters for decades, with the prospect of winning a life-changing sum for a modest outlay acting as the catalyst for the explosion in popularity of, first, the football pools and, in more recent times, the National Lottery.
However, score draws and spinning balls aren’t the only routes to riches in the gambling sphere. It turns out that horseracing can generate a pretty decent payout for less than the price of the daily racing paper. Tales of legendary Lucky 15s and Spectacular Scoop 6 windfalls invariably hit the headlines, and this week provided another example, as an inspired Betfair punter turned £1 into £103,611 in the space of a magical three hours on Wednesday, 24th July.

The low-key venues of Catterick and Wexford provided the stage for the hero of this tale, with six selections from the former track and two from the latter making up an each-way eight-fold which turned from optimistic to gold in double quick time. So, just how did he do it?
- Leg 1 – 2:28 Wexford, Broomfield Bijou: Beaten by a combined 39 lengths in her two previous outings, this six-year-old mare was, nevertheless, sent off as the 11/8f as she dropped in class from Listed Level. There was no sweat for our punter in the opener, with Broomfield Bijou sauntering home by six lengths.
- Leg 2 – 2:40 Catterick, Easy Peeler: The soon-to-be wealthy prospector kept things simple in leg two by siding with the hot favourite Easy Peeler. Showing stacks of promise when second on debut, the John and Sean Quinn-trained juvenile duly built on that effort to come home a length to the good at odds of 5/6.
- Leg 3 – 3:10 Catterick, Chuti Manika: The “second on debut, first next time” strategy struck again in leg 3, this time with this Charlie Johnston juvenile. In common with many from this yard, Chuta Manika made the running and never looked like relinquishing the lead on the way to a 15/8 success.
- Leg 4 – 3:40 Catterick, Harmonia: Winless in her first four starts, this David Evans filly had shown promise when going down by just a head on her first crack at seven furlongs earlier in the month. Kept to that distance, she duly hacked up at 2/1 to continue our punter’s hot streak in the juvenile division.
- Leg 5 – 4:10 Catterick, Swinging Eddie: Four races, four winning favourites or joint favourites – nothing untoward so far. And then came a 16/1 shot, Swinging Eddie. Largely out of form in 2024, it required a leap of faith to support the Grant Tuer-trained eight-year-old – although he had dropped to a mark a pound below his most recent winning rating. That faith was rewarded with a one-length victory to send the acca into overdrive.
- Leg 6 – 4:40 Catterick, Furzig: With four course and distance wins to his name and a decent effort at York last time, Richard Fahey’s Furzig looked one of the more obvious contenders for this Class 4 handicap. Back at his favourite track, he got the job done in the end, but only just, bobbing his head at just the right time to score by little more than a flared nostril at odds of 11/4.
- Leg 7 – 5:10 Catterick, One Of Our Own: With a record of one win from 21 starts, One Of Our Own didn’t appear the most reliable sort to deliver in leg 7. However, down 18 pounds from her career-high rating and with the cheekpieces reapplied, she came with a late flourish to land odds of 9/2.
- Leg 8 – 5:28 Wexford, Three By Two: It all came down to this. Without a win in eight outings, beaten by 26 lengths last time out, and only sixth in the betting at 9/1, could Three By Two put his best hoof forward? In the early stages of a fog-shrouded race, it was difficult to see what was going on, but when the mist cleared, Three By Two held the lead over the second last and wasn’t for passing on his way to a jubilant success by one and a half lengths.
Early Prices Boosts Returns

Odds savvy readers may notice that, at SP, this prophetic punt would have returned a – still not to be sniffed at – sum of around £66,000. The early bird catches the worm (or, in this case, an extra £37,000) – with the Betfair early prices working to the punter’s advantage in style.
