Everton Go From Zero to Hero Away from Home

Everton have not been a particularly strong team away from home in the Premier League era. They have been ever-present in the EPL era, and from the first season up to their most recent win over Newcastle United at the end of February they have won 171 times on the road in the top flight. They have played 647 away matches in the Premier League, meaning their win rate away from home is around 26%.

In their away clashes, they have collected a grand total of 694 points, which puts them seventh on the all-time PL away-day table. Only the other five clubs to have contested every single Premier League season, along with Manchester City, are above them. The Toffees are seventh on the all-time home table too, and also occupy that same position when both home and away fixtures are taken into account.

That might paint a picture of a club that has collected a fairly standard number of away wins, but that has certainly not been the case over the past few campaigns. Everton have struggled badly for away wins, with only their home form keeping them in the top flight in more than one season recently. Or, at least, that was the case until the return of David Moyes, or the Moyesiah as some Evertonians refer to him.

Victory Over Newcastle is Everton’s Seventh on the Road this Term

Three goals and some late Jordan Pickford heroics earned Moyes’ men a win over Newcastle on the 28th of February. It was their seventh win of the PL campaign, and means that, based on away form alone, they are third in the PL this term. Only Arsenal have more away victories (eight) than the Toffees, and they have played a game more.

Date Opponent Venue Result
30th Aug 2025 Wolves Molineux Everton Win (2-3)
24th Nov 2025 Manchester Utd Old Trafford Everton Win (0-1)
2nd Dec 2025 Bournemouth Vitality Stadium Everton Win (0-1)
30th Dec 2025 Nottingham Forest City Ground Everton Win (0-2)
18th Jan 2026 Aston Villa Villa Park Everton Win (0-1)
7th Feb 2026 Fulham Craven Cottage Everton Win (1-2)
28th Feb 2026 Newcastle St. James’ Park Everton Win (2-3)

That means that over 4% of Everton’s entire tally of wins away from home in the Premier League have come this season! Moyes led the Blues to eight wins on the road in his first spell at the club, while Roberto Martinez (2013/14) also managed eight. Carlo Ancelotti (2020/21) holds the club’s PL record with 11, although that was a strange season with no fans allowed inside the grounds for most games.

If we look back to when Moyes returned to the club in the first month of 2025, we can see that his second spell in charge has yielded 12 Premier League wins away from home in just 23 matches. That accounts for over 7% of their all-time EPL successes on their travels – in little more than a year!

Startling Turnaround

Those already amazing numbers are all the more remarkable when we look at just how bad Everton had been away from Goodison Park before the second coming of Moyes. In 2024/25, up until he returned on the 11th of January, Everton had managed just one victory on the road. That came against Ipswich, a side that went on to be relegated.

In fairness, Everton only had two wins at home in the first 20 games they played in the league that season before Moyes’ reappointment. However, they were then brilliant on their travels, while remaining so-so at home. The final analysis of the 2024/25 campaign shows that they ended with just five wins at home while registering six on the road.

However, they only lost five games in front of their own fans at Goodison, suffering defeat seven times on their travels. That gave their points tally a nice symmetry, with 24 points collected at home and the same number away. The fact that they won more PL games away from home in 2024/25 than they did at Goodison makes the simple narrative of Everton’s poor home form this term being down to issues moving to the Hill Dickinson questionable. However, that is a separate discussion.

Returning to the poor away record of the Toffees in the years preceding Moyes’ return to the club, Everton picked up just five away wins in league action in the 2023/24 campaign. Amazingly, all five came in a purple patch between the 23rd of September and the 16th of December.

They were much worse in 2022/23, with Frank Lampard at the helm until January and Sean Dyche taking over after that. They mustered just two wins away from home, their form at Goodison saving them, including a big win on the final day against Bournemouth that saw them finish just two points above Leicester.

Rewinding a further 12 months, and the Toffees were, somehow, even worse away from home, again barely surviving thanks to nine home wins. They were simply woeful on the road, though, again managing just two victories. However, they collected a mere 10 points on their travels, compared to 15 the previous season.

All of that means that the Toffees managed just 10 away wins in pretty much three and a half seasons BM (Before Moyes) and have then won 12 times in less than 14 months since he replaced Dyche. Everton’s away-day blues are over… now they just need to win at home.
